Bots and banknotes

Romanian businesses are actively integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), though consumer payment habits and technology readiness present a gap. Payments remain heavily reliant on physical currency; according to a payment processor, banknotes and coins still account for 55 to 60 percent of transactions, a figure only marginally lower than previous years. Despite this, the industry is exploring “agentic commerce,” where AI assists consumers through product search and parts of the purchase process.

Discussions at InnVolve 2026 highlighted that technological capability does not equate to consumer adoption, as trust, security concerns, and established habits continue to influence buying patterns. Experts noted that while AI moves from experimentation to routine operations, consumer behavior and internal processes evolve at different speeds. Concerns surrounding financing were also raised, with some research indicating that many firms anticipate government support for AI implementation.

However, experts advised developing contingency plans, as the primary question remains who will finance adoption and what measurable impact it will have on profitability. For some local firms, AI has proven to be a productivity enhancer, addressing labor shortages rather than necessitating headcount reduction. Furthermore, successful technology implementation requires applying tools to established business models that companies already understand.

Managing the increasing noise and complexity—from consumers exposed to numerous digital touchpoints to the need to measure true profitability beyond gross merchandise value—is a significant challenge. Ultimately, the conversation suggests that AI, payment methods, talent, and investment are becoming interconnected management issues. While the potential of bots and advanced technology is clear, operational value must be prioritized over hype.

The focus is shifting toward understanding how these diverse elements—including the persistent use of physical banknotes—interact within a business’s overall strategy.
